The Colors of Rest

This time of year is my favorite. I love that shift a home takes and the beauty from outside we all try to bring in. The colors of fall are something most appreciate and look forward to…a change in the season. It’s a sweet reminder that nothing in life is completely permanent and so we must open our eyes and hearts and soak it in.

Fall is beautiful time to bring in faux foliage. The faux market has gotten so beautiful and affordable and such a great way to have little peeks of color all throughout your home. I love to add it to tables…dining tables, coffee tables, entryway tables…you get the drift. It doesn’t need much, just a few stems and you are all set.

Florida has had some clean breezes these last few days and it has made me get a little quieter. Just listening to the sounds of very good things. My childrens’ voices, the wind through our trees, my feet on a run. We even have a few trees trying their very hardest to enter into the fall spirit, showing their oranges, reds, and purples. They know something that I think many of us forget.

I learned a few years ago that leaves don’t actually change colors. Those colors exist in them all the time. But when fall comes and the sun shines a bit less, they can’t soak in as much chlorophyll as before and they begin to take a rest from producing all the green. To our delight, they begin showing the beauty that’s been in them all along. We call it Autumn, but they don’t give it a name. They are just living out their perfect design and taking a needed rest.

So this season, as you try your design hand at placing some fall into your home with flowers, leaves and stems, let it be a sweet reminder that sometimes your best work, most beautiful work, comes only when you rest too.
