Boy Room Inspo: A Few Thoughts/ All Details

This update had the main goal of creating a room that would grow with my son. I wanted it to be a place he felt comfortable and had ownership. SO when I chose a theme to help me move the project along, it only made sense to choose his favorite thing, shoes. He’s in all his preteen-ness and sneakers are the main way he kind-of expresses his style. And the commitment on the art I chose wasn’t huge so truly that could be changed easily if we ever decide this isn’t the right vibe anymore.

This biggest lesson this space has taught me is to be ok with white space. I struggle at times to be ok with the simplicity of a design and tend to keep styling and adding until the space feels more “complete.” Ironically I am always drawn to those spaces that have the simple clean style, the photos are so beautiful but I struggle to leave a room that way. This room didn’t need all the layering. It has some white space and he tells me daily how much he enjoys it.

This room had a budget set and so by the end of it I wasn’t able to complete the built in like I had planned. Even more than money, I ran out of time. Thankfully I found this desk off of offer-up for $15 which ended up being a famous piece worth over $2000. I refinished and now it sits in his room. Second GREAT lesson. Nothing is wrong with having a budget, moves you to get creative and resourceful. This desk is like heirloom piece and honestly brought some story into his space and I think it needed it.

The other things that kept this room on budget were things like buying digital prints on Etsy and printing off at Staples. Sourcing the look for less. This was great to go in with a plan and then keep shopping until I found it for a good price. This is very true for the sconces. Once I knew the look I wanted, I searched very specifically and found them for the least expensive price. Also chose to not hardwire and buy plug-in which saved a ton too! Ended up painting the walls the same color as the rest of the house. This meant that I didn’t have to purchase paint since I had some in the garage and we painted the room together. Grabbed an old light from the garage and spray painted the light for his desk area and used puck lights so that it didn’t have to hardwired either. Spray painted his cork board too which was pretty beat up s that I didn’t have to replace it either. If there is a will there is a way. Look around, you’ll find treasures I am sure that will keep you on budget and still create a beautiful space!

Ok…enough chatting. Let’s skip to what you want…the links. Keeping it simple this time. Just made a list.

Jess
